I guess for some women whose marriages are ruined, it's just easier to pretend that if your house was just a little cleaner, if you just lost a little more weight, then all the problems will just magically go away. It uses religion (this is your God-given role, etc.) to make women feel even more guilty for wanting to be treated like people. The main premise is to be a perfect domestic slave, to act "childlike", keep your house clean, and pretty much worship your husband and take all the blame for everything, and maybe you'll be able to make your husband love you.
